Without counting Fluttershy, there is another pony that I like a lot, and that is Princess Luna! I just fell in love with her design when I first saw her in the second episode. So cute! I was like "what the fuck?" when I saw her in season 2, because I was expecting the previous cute one. But although she's less cuter and more tomboy, her personnality is what I expected in the first place. And I became used to the new design too!
Since I saw the dresses done by Rarity in Suited for Success that I found so pretty, I had always wanted to do one too. It's after seeing the art of another artist that I began this drawing.
If you don't know these drawings, go look the dresses made by entitled "Galloping Gala 2012". My background and atmosphere are heavily inspired by his/her work!
So, speaking about my drawing, it took me the whole day to find something I like. I played a lot with designs and colors. My aim was to depict the dress that Luna would have worn if she had intending the Grand Galloping Gala. And what she would have looked like.
Lauren Faust said this about the changed design: When Nightmare Moon was defeated, her evil power was eradicated. Luna was reborn with her magic levels very low. It took time for her "good" power to come back to her, and now she's healed, reformed and rehabilitated and it's indicated by her magic mane.
I wanted at first to do a mix between the little Luna and the grown up Luna. I did the adult like body she has in season 2 with the mane she had when little in season 1. But it wasn't so good, so I took the moon shape hair that I did and added waves to be more like the new design. The result is that she has her magical mane, but it's not entirely floating.
For the design of the dress, I kept in mind moon and stars.
The bottom is a black cloud almost the same than the one of Rainbow Dash dress. It's a reference to the end of the episode Luna Eclipse, where she stole the cloud of Rainbow Dash.
The top of the dress on her back was at first exactly like her tail to suggest it beneath. But with her mane, the colors were too alike, so I chose to do it the same color that her cutie mark in season 1. The moon is exactly where it should be on her flank.
Since she's a princess, I wanted her dress to look more royal than those of the others. So I added more details. I put stars on the edges of the dress, pearls on the back and on the legs, and a detailed choker around her neck (that totally suits her!). The dress has also a train.
I didn't wanted either for the dress to be with too much details, so before ending with this design, I did countless attemps. I tried to do the same style than the show, but with smaller lines.
I'm very proud of the result!
[EDIT 1] And don't forget to take a look at this short fanfic inspired by this drawing! A very cute story about Luna at the Gala, depicting her state of mind as a Princess and her newly return. By and one of his friends.
[EDIT 2] I add too the wonderful dress that did with fabrics for her Luna plushie! It's really pretty!
